Moving On

Hi, guys. So, I haven’t blogged in a while. I’ve been busy moving and drawing comics like crazy. Now I’m settled in at the new place, have a couple months’ buffer, and I felt like I should sit down and tell you about it.

There are advantages and disadvantages to having no one around for most of the day. I’ve certainly been productive since I moved. There’s no one around to distract me except a black furry blob who sleeps most of the day. And I do miss having people around, but at the same time it’s relaxing to not have to act human most of the time. I can save my emotional energy for the times when I need it. At the moment, these times are job hunting, and hopefully soon getting comfortable in a job. After those things get done, I can think about getting a social life back together. For now Blob Cat, Invisible Cat, my family and my roommate should be quite sufficient to keep me sane.

Comics help too. That’s one reason why I’m so far ahead. It’s always nice to have something to do that feels both fun and productive. Books are great for getting lost in when I’m not feeling creative, but since I’m trying to spend minimally right now, I haven’t bought many new books. I love rereading my old books but I’m also exploring the realm of ebooks.

It isn’t the same reading on a screen but I think I’ll be able to get used to it. My netbook doesn’t make a very good reader, so I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a Kindle. I never thought that I’d be considering buying a piece of electronics because I wanted to stop spending money. It seems odd but for me, it just might make sense.

Reading ebooks on my netbook, it’s difficult to get really involved, perhaps because this is my browsing device and it’s hard not to get distracted by Twitter or some other shiny website. But one activity that ebooks has led me to maintains my interest better.

I’ve been volunteering with Distributed Proofreaders, proofing text versions of old books in the public domain that have been scanned in and need cleaning up before they are added to the free collection at Project Gutenberg. It’s something I have a lot of fun with. I’m a natural proofreader and I’ve done OCR comparison proofing before, so I got right into it, and it passes the time very well when I’m not feeling creative. It has an advantage over simply reading in that it also feels like a productive use of my time.

And when I do feel the need to get out of the house, there is plenty to do around here. Yesterday I walked over to the mall just to take in some shiny new scenery, then I went to the local thrift shop and checked out their stock. Not as extensive as the one near my old place, but I managed to find some good things anyway.

I think that’s it for now. I’m going to try to blog more often, so I’ll save my more in-depth thoughts on comics for a later post.
